Nation Coming Out Day
Welcome to the Joe M. Lyman/We R1 Campaign National Coming Out Day!!!!

National Coming Out Day (or NCOD) was founded in 1988 by Robert Eichberg, a psychologist from New Mexico and founder of the personal growth workshop, The Experience, and Jean O'Leary, an openly gay political leader from Los Angeles and then head of the National Gay Rights Advocates. The date of October 11 was chosen because it was the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
Initially administered from the West Hollywood offices of the National Gay Rights Advocates, eighteen states participated in the first NCOD, garnering national media coverage. In its second year NCOD headquarters moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and participation grew to 21 states. After a media push in 1990 NCOD was observed in all 50 states and seven other countries. Participation continued to grow and in 1990 NCOD merged their efforts with the Human Rights Campaign.

What does it mean, to come out?
When and Why should you come out?
It means a whole lot. Not for us, but for YOU!!! When you come out, you will feel better. Holding something like this in you, can be harming you, more then what you might think. Coming out is great, because you can find someone that we really love, and might spend the rest of your life with.
Now, When and Why You Should Come Out? That is the question, that all LGBT people think about, before they do. Let's start out with Why? Why should you come out? Well, because you are not you, right now. What do I mean by this? This is saying "...because you are not you, right now" means that you are not telling the truth to you, nor everybody who loves you. You might be thinking, "It is ok. I can come out when this person is gone..." or "If I move away, I can tell my family after I got, where I am going." NO! DON'T! Why? Because it should be something that you should do, before you go, or do anything big.
Now let's talk about when. When should you come out? Well...again...it is up to you, and when the time is right. It can be at dinner, one-on-one, out to lunch, or etc. You just have to feel it out. If you want, you can see how you friend(s) feel about it, and talk to them first. Because most likely, they will accept you, then some people in your family. Not saying that they won't accept you, but most of the time, they have a open mind, then your family. You should try telling your brother(s) and/or sister(s) first, then telling your parents. Again, I am NOT telling you how to do this, because it is up to you, and how you feel.
But, what I will tell you, is don't wait to long. You can come out whenever you want, but you don't want to live your life, in a lie. The sooner you come out, the better chance you will find the one person, that is right for you. But, that person can come into your life right after you come out, they might be already in your life now, or they might come into your life 1-15 years from now.
Also, lying to yourself and the people around you, can be doing harm to your health. So, with all of this being said, please, come out, as soon as you can. The sooner you do this, the better you will feel.
